Biography
Dr. Yeates Conwell is Professor of Psychiatry, Associate
Chair for Academic Affairs, and Co-Director of the
Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide at the
University of Rochester School of Medicine and
Dentistry, Rochester, New York. He also maintains a
private practice (part time) in general and geriatric
psychiatry.
Dr. Conwell received his BA degree from Princeton
University and his MD degree from the University of
Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his
postdoctoral training at Yale University School of
Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Board-certified by the National Board of Medical
Examiners and the American Board of Psychiatry and
Neurology, with added qualifications in geriatric
psychiatry, he is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric
Association and a member of various other national and
international academic and professional organizations,
including the American Association for Geriatric
Psychiatry, the American Association of Suicidology, the
International Psychogeriatric Association, and the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; he also is
an elected member of the Academy for Suicide
Research. He is recipient of the National Psychiatric
Endowment Fund-Laughlin Award as the outstanding
resident in psychiatry from Yale University School of
Medicine (1984), the National Institute of Mental Health
(NIMH) Geriatric Mental Health Academic Award
91988-1993), and the American Association of Suicidology
Edwin A. Shneidman Award for outstanding research
contributions in the field of suicidology (1994). In
addition, he was selected by his peers to be included in
the 1994 and 1998 editions of The Best Doctors in
America.
Dr. Conwell has lectured extensively at major national
and international professional meetings and has written
numerous chapters and journal articles on suicide and
depression in the elderly. In addition, he is
consulting editor for Suicide and Life-Threatening
Behavior and a member of the editorial boardsof the
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and the
American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. He also serves
as ad-hoc reviewer for a number of other professional
journals.
The National Institute of Mental Health has continuously
funded Dr. Conwell's research on suicide in later life
since 1987.
